THE ROMAN PARISH CHURCHES OF LUNIGIANA  Parish church was the place where people joined to overcome the trouble and strife of every day life, where they met to celebrate annual festivals, the more important occasions of the community and of the life of each individual. Today, in the shadowy penumbra of the interior, the mysterious sculptings that adorn the columns speak a language that has disappeared in time, carrying symbols that have been eloquent signs of sin and of spiritual saving. Mermaids, beasts and “tetes coupees” may be found on the columns of Codiponte, where an ancient fountain for baptist immersion reminds us of the anterior church with the roman one. On the columns of S. Paolo di Vendaso, miraculous stone flowers, unreal and extraordinary, intertwine with plaits of branches of a complex and elaborate making. In the parish of Sorano, in Filattiera, the ancient “Francigena Way” has left signs of Tuscan and Lombardian romanism, both melded and exalted in the monumental and suggestive apse. In those images, saturated with ancient terrors but also rich with lightened hope, we can recognise today one of the moments of our spiritual evolution and, together, the sign of the artistic and cultural currents which in medieval times ran through the valleys and roads of Lunigiana. |
